We constantly read a piece of work and decide whether we like it or not. If we don’t like it, we say so, which is impressionistic criticism. You critique a piece of work according to your own feelings. Impressionistic criticism’s audience is the critic him or herself.
Critics rate the arts according to their effect upon the senses, and so prepare the way for a purely impressionistic criticism. For all new critics, such impressionistic approaches pose both practical and theoretical problems. In practical terms, it makes reliable comparisons of different critics difficult, if not irrelevant.
